BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A local blogger claims Western Washington University doesn’t like trees as it cuts down 48 to make way for a new building.

The NW Citizen blog paraphrases a Joni Mitchell classic, calling it a “case of cut down trees to put up a parking lot.”

But Western spokesman Paul Cocke says that’s not the case at all.

He says site preparation for the interdisciplinary science building that resumed this week requires removal of the trees, but they’ll be replaced by 56 new trees of diverse species once landscaping is done.

And the trees that are cut down will put to good use as wood for benches on campus, landscaping mulch and even salmon habitat restoration.

More information on the site preparation is available on the Western Today website.
