BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Local boating regulations have been updated.

Inspections for boats headed to Lake Whatcom or Lake Samish this season open April 24th, with some new regulations this year to improve lake health and safety.

The regulations in place at both lakes specifically protect against aquatic invasive species (AIS), pollution from boat motors, and shoreline erosion, while increasing swimmer safety.

This year boaters will be expected to purchase their AIS permit ahead of inspection.

Once a boat passes inspection, the permit will be issued.

Boat motors will also be required to have at least a one star low emissions rating under the new regulations.

These measures will help protect both lakes as important sources of drinking water and year-round residences.
