OAK HARBOR, Wash. — Chinook salmon fisheries will be restricted in areas of Puget Sound again this year because of projected low returns of salmon to the Nooksack, Stillaguamish and other rivers.
Restrictions will be in place in the San Juan Islands in August and at Deception Pass, Port Gardner and Admiralty Inlet later in the year.
Department of Fish and Wildlife Director Kelly Susewind says while fishing restrictions aren’t a long term solution, they will help populations recover and indirectly benefit southern resident orcas that depend on chinook salmon for food.
