SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) — The Lummi Tribe continues their campaign to save the southern resident orcas and help restore their home.
Lummi Tribe members along with activists and scientists in Seattle called for a study on human-caused stressors to the Salish Sea, and they want to put a hold on Navy underwater weapons testing until the sea is healthier.
Using 1985 levels as a baseline, the tribe says they can determine how healthy the sea is from the amount of salmon it contains.
Through their Sacred Sea Campaign, the Lummi Nation plans to bring back Lolita, the killer whale who was captured off Puget Sound in 1970 and taken into captivity.
