LUMMI NATION, Wash. — The secretary for the Lummi Nation wrote to NOAA pleading for immediate help for two southern resident orcas that experts say are likely starving to death.
The Seattle Times reports the Lummi officials hope to employ some of the rescue methods that were tried with J50, a young orca that died last year.
But with NOAA shuttered during the partial government shutdown, contractors that work with them can’t take any action without their permission.
Ken Balcomb with the Center for Whale Research has said he believes the two whales won’t survive until summer.
