BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Lummi master carvers have created another totem honoring a revered Pacific Northwest species.
The Spirit of the Waters totem features a 14 foot orca resting on two salmon, signifying the relationship between the fish and the southern resident killer whales that depend on them for survival.
Indigenous activists and others will hold a blessing ceremony on Tuesday, May 3rd, at 6 p.m. at Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship on Ellsworth Street.
They’ll then take the totem on a ten stop tour of the Northwest to call for the removal of four dams on the Snake River.
They say those dams are leading both species to extinction.
