LYNDEN, Wash. — Lynden Police Chief John Billester has retired after two years at the top job and 28 years with the Lynden Police Department.

He officially called it a career on Wednesday.

Billester is a native of southern California and spent some time with large agencies there before taking a vacation in Whatcom County and British Columbia in 1990.

That convinced him he wanted to live and work in a small town, and he joined the Ferndale and then Lynden Police Departments.

The Lynden Tribune reports that former Ferndale Police Chief Michael Knapp is taking the role on an interim basis until a new Lynden Chief is named.
