BELLINGHAM, Wash. — City crews are cautiously planning work on water mains that run through the area of the 1999 pipeline explosion in Whatcom Creek.
It’s time for maintenance and repair work on two 80-year-old underground water mains that the City of Bellingham says are essential for supplying downtown with water.
Crews will be working to clear trees and vegetation to remove hazards to the water mains and also to provide quicker access if either main were to fail and require repair.
The City’s Operations and Natural Resources divisions are teaming up to plan the work carefully to protect the water mains while still preserving the sensitive environmental restoration projects currently in place.
They expect the work to begin later this month, ending in October.
