PORT ANGELES, Wash. — A 29-year-old Chinese man was medevaced from a commercial freighter in the Strait of Juan de Fuca after he was exposed to phosphine gas aboard the vessel.

Coast Guard crews from Port Angeles responded to the call from the Great Fluency, a 665-foot vessel, at about 8:45 AM Sunday.

Serious exposure to phospine gas, which is common on these vessels, can lead to coma, and liver and kidney damage among other issues.

The man being transported was nauseous, but still able to climb down a ladder before being taken to the hospital for treatment.
