AUBURN, Wash. – A man died in a fire near Auburn that police said started when he threw a Molotov cocktail at deputies.
The King County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were investigating a vandalism complaint at the time.
David Crawford, the man’s neighbor, told KOMO he called 911. “He had thrown a rock and hit our house. He was throwing several rocks and hit the car,” Crawford said.
Fire investigators said the flames from the Molotov cocktail spread to a building.
Deputies said the man barricaded himself inside the building after he threw the explosive at them.
He was either unwilling or unable to escape and likely died of smoke inhalation.
A deputy suffered minor burns after his uniform caught fire and had to “stop, drop and roll.”
