LAKEWOOD, Wash. – The man who was apparently trying to steal a catalytic converter when the owner of the vehicle shot him to death has been identified.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office says 40-year-old Brent Jalmari Peltomaa of University Place died Saturday of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police say he was underneath a truck trying to steal a catalytic converter when the truck’s owner, who was sleeping, woke up and shot him then dragged his body to a nearby field.

The owner of the truck, Michael Campbell, was charged Monday with second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.
