MAPLE FALLS, Wash. — A landlord from Maple Falls is in jail after two of his tenants say he groped them and raped one while they were hiking and drinking in late August.

Undersheriff Jeff Parks reports 51-year-old Mark Millenaar and the two young men were in a remote part of Whatcom County when Millenaar pushed one man down and started kissing him, but let him up after he repeatedly told Millenaar to stop.

After hiking further the other tenant passed out and Parks says Millenaar raped the man he attacked earlier.

One of the victims showed deputies a text exchange in which Millenaar said the “sex stuff should never have happened,” and told deputies Millenaar gave them cellphones and other expensive gifts that they felt were bribes to keep them quiet.

Parks says Millenaar claimed the sex was consensual.
