BELLINGHAM, Wa. – The Whatcom County Health Department has some advice on choosing the right facial covering to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Health officials say that wearing a mask in public is one of the best way to slow the spread of the virus, but not all are created equal, and some offer more protection than others.

People are advised to look for a mask that has at least two layers of fabric, fits snugly, and does not have a vent or valve as those can allow the virus to escape into the air.

Face coverings like neck gaiters or buffs, ill-fitting bandanas, and knitted masks have been found to be less effective than those made of cotton or linen.
