BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Mayor Seth Fleetwood has pledged action on the homeless camp at Civic Athletic complex in Bellingham.
Speaking to the Bellingham City Council committee of the whole Monday, he discussed plans to move forward in the wake of the warming site set up by the city during recent cold weather.
He said it remains the City’s intention to go through the steps of ending the encampment, and staff is reviewing the processes necessary.
Fleetwood said he does not expect a repeat of what happened at City Hall January 28th, noting that they are “dramatically different situations on a number of levels.”
He said they are reviewing a process by which case workers from agencies can engage with people at the camp.
Once campers are re-engaged with service providers, the City will address the means to end the encampment.
Meantime the group Bellingham Occupied Protest Mutual aid continues to solicit donations for campers at the site.
A recent post from last Friday that has since been removed from the group’s Instagram page solicited donations of “weed” and “ciggies” for campers at the site, among other items.
