BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The presiding judge has called a special hearing Thursday as Timothy Bass’s trial in the cold case murder of Mandy Stavik in Whatcom County draws closer.
The hearing will consider allowing media in the courtroom, and the Washington State Association of Broadcasters has enlisted a lawyer to petition for full media access to the proceedings.
Eighteen-year-old Amanda “Mandy” Stavik didn’t return after she went jogging near her family’s home in Acme when she was back from college during Thanksgiving break in 1989.
Her naked body was found in the South Fork of the Nooksack River three days later.
DNA evidence eventually led investigators to Bass and he was arrested in December 2017.
