OLYMPIA, Wash. — More scientific data is leading to new fish consumption advisories throughout the state.

Officials at the Washington State Department of Health are adding thirty-two rivers, lakes and streams to their list of areas with contaminated fish.

Mercury and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are responsible for most of the advisories, but the uptick is due to more scientific data — not more contamination.

There are advisories for yellow perch, largemouth bass and smallmouth bass in Lake Samish and Lake Whatcom and the Department recommends that meals should be limited to only a few per month.

According to the Department, cutthroat trout and kokanee remain a healthy choice in Lake Whatcom.
