SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) – Seattle Seahawk Michael Bennett is accusing Las Vegas police of racially motivated excessive force.
Bennett said he was ordered onto the ground, had a knee jammed into his back, and was threatened at gunpoint. He has retained a civil rights lawyer.
Bennett said police singled him out as he ran from what sounded like gunshots in a crowded area following the August 26th fight between Floyd Mayweather Junior and Conor McGregor.
Police department undersheriff Kevin McMahill refuted the accusations of racial bias. “I see no evidence that race played any role in this incident,” McMahill said.
The department is conducting an internal investigation.
Bennett sometimes sits during the national anthem before games to protest racial injustice.
