BURLINGTON, Wash. – Saturday will mark one year since the Cascade Mall shooting that killed Tanya Young’s mom, and now the Western Washington University student is starting a scholarship to honor her.

Shayla Martin was one of five people killed in the shooting at the Burlington mall when a gunman opened fire in the Macy’s store.

Young toldĀ KOMO she is starting the scholarship at the Skagit Valley College, where she graduated in 2015.

She said she wouldn’t have been able to go at all without her mother’s support.
