MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A Mount Vernon project that was in the works for about a decade is finally complete.
Community members, business people and elected officials gathered Saturday at the Skagit Riverwalk Park to celebrate the completion of the city’s floodwall protection project.
The Skagit Valley Herald says construction of the 1.7-mile floodwall along the Skagit River started in 2010.
Mount Vernon Mayor Jill Boudreau said the project brings a 40 percent reduction in flood insurance premiums, and removes more than 200 buildings from the regulatory floodplain which increases community safety and improves the economic vitality of downtown Mount Vernon.
