MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — An explosion and fire destroyed a Mount Vernon home and closed nearby Mount Vernon High School Monday.

Fire fighters say a leaking natural gas line helped fuel the fire at the home on Fulton Street.

Mount Vernon Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Harris tells KOMO two people were inside the home when it exploded at about 6 a.m.

That person had minor injuries.

An apartment building next door to the home was evacuated.

Harris says it’s unclear if a gas leak was the cause and the investigation continues.

Classes at the high school are back on Tuesday.
