MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — The vote on an ordinance that would allow overnight parking for the homeless at Mount Vernon churches has been delayed.

The Mount Vernon City Council put off the vote Wednesday after a council meeting that the Skagit Valley Herald says was unusually crowded.

Fourteen people spoke on the proposed emergency ordinance — six in favor and eight opposed.

The ordinance would allow religious organizations to let up to 12 people in 5 cars park on their property nightly from 6 PM to 8 AM.

The council will reconvene September 11 for another discussion.
