PARIS (AP) — The familiar names keep advancing in the men’s draw at the French Open.
Top-seed Andy Murray and number-three Stan Wawrinka moved into the quarterfinals with straight-set victories today. Murray became the 15th man with 650 tour-level match wins.
This marks Murray’s seventh overall trip to the round of eight at Roland Garros. He was the runner-up a year ago. The three-time major champion is now 650-181 for his career, a .782 winning percentage.
Wawrinka reached the French Open quarterfinals for the fourth time after beating Gael Monfils 7-5, 7-6 (7), 6-2. The 2015 champion sealed victory on his third match point with a backhand down the line that the Frenchman could not return.
None of the women still playing for the French Open title has ever won a Grand Slam tournament.
Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic reached her first French Open quarterfinal by coming back to edge 97th-ranked Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Third-seeded Simona Halep advanced to the quarterfinals by beating No. 21 Carla Suarez Navarro 6-1, 6-1. And fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina advanced by beating Croatian qualifier Petra Martic 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Martic will next face third-seeded Simona Halep, the French Open runner-up in 2014.
Caroline Garcia, seeded 28th, beat French compatriot Alize Cornet in straight sets at the French Open to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.
