SPOKANE, Wash. — A former NAACP leader in Spokane whose life unraveled after she was exposed as a white woman pretending to be black has been charged with welfare fraud.
Rachel Dolezal, who legally changed her name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016, was charged this week after court documents say she illegally received more than $8,800 in food and childcare assistance from August 2015 to November 2017.
KHQ-TV reports a state investigator found Diallo had reported her income as usually less than $500 a month, but a subpoena of her self-employment records showed deposits totaling nearly $84,000 in that time.
The former civil rights activist told investigators she “fully disclosed her information” and declined to answer further.
