BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. — The Navy safely detonated a decades old unexploded military mine in the waters near Bainbridge Island just after 8:00 Tuesday night.
Coast Guard crews established a 1,500-yard safety zone and a 5,000-foot flight restriction zone for several hours near Bremerton until they could dispose of the device which turned out to be inert.
A Navy spokesperson says they haven’t been able to determine the origin of the mine, but will continue to investigate.
The device was discovered floating in the water by a State Department of Natural Resources Crew.
