FERNDALE, WASH – New transitional housing for homeless families in Ferndale are in the works.

Riley Sweeney with the city says they’ve partnered with the Interfaith Coalition to set aside four housing units.

“The city was in a position to acquire a piece of land with a condemned house on it that we would need in the next 20 years for a round a bout to help improve our transportation in the community,” says Sweeney.

Sweeney says volunteers are getting the units move in ready.

The two groups are hoping the homes can be used by families who would need them for about a year, and would pay a reduced rent.

They would also have help from the Interfaith Coalition to gain some stability.

“I think that it’s absolutely an example of taking the next step.  When you’re a smaller city like Ferndale we’re willing to try things, we can do these sorts of pilot programs without as much of the red tape that you might find, in say, Seattle,” says Sweeney.

Riley Sweeney spoke with Peter Wagner on Your Afternoon Show, you can hear that full conversation here.
