BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Outside hitter Abby Phelps and opposite Joellee Buckner both tabbed double-doubles to lead the 10th-ranked Western Washington University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Concordia Thursday evening in front of 907 fans on Student Appreciation Night on WECU Court at Carver Gym.
Game scores were 25-17, 25-20, 25-17 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference match-up.
The Vikings won their third consecutive match to improve to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in GNAC play. Concordia dropped to 6-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.
“I thought tonight was one of our best all-around matches of the season,” said 18th-year head coach Diane Flick-Williams. “It goes with our motto that we don’t have any stars, just a galaxy.”
Buckner (Sr., Colville, WA) led the Vikings with 15.0 points, recording 11 kills, 6 blocks and one service ace. She added 12 digs for her seventh double-double of the season.
Phelps (Jr., Manson, WA/Chelan) led the Vikings with 12 kills and 16 digs, also adding 2 service aces for 14.0 points. The double-double was her league-leading 11th of the season.
Senior outside hitter Arielle Turner (Leavenworth, WA/Cascade) added 9 kills and a pair of service aces, and junior middle blocker Michaela Hall (Centralia, WA) turned in a match-high 7 blocks.
Junior setter Brette Boesel (Brewster, WA) led all players with 35 assists, efficiently leading the Vikings to a .274 team hitting percentage.
“When you see a balanced attack and all those contributions, that comes from the setter position,” said Flick-Williams on her junior setter. “I thought she did a great job running our game plan and putting our hitters in position to score well. She was basically not noticed, and that’s the sign of a great setter.”
The Vikings took control of the first set going on an early 9-2 run, and went on to a 25-17 victory to go up 1-0 in the match. Concordia pulled to within three at 10-7, but the Vikings answered going on an extended 9-5 run to take control of the set. The Vikings hit .244 for the set (14 kills, 1 error, 41 attacks) and was led by 5 kills and 2 blocks from Buckner (.556 attack pct.).
WWU went up 2-0 with a 25-20 second-set victory, riding the 7 kills and .545 hitting percentage of Phelps. The Vikings pulled away from an early one-point game at 8-7, going on a 9-2 run to grab a 17-9 lead and finished off the set with the 25-20 win.
The Vikings and Cavaliers were locked in a tight one in the third set, with WWU leading by one at 8-7. The Vikings pulled away slightly going on a 4-1 run, forcing CU to call a timeout trailing 12-8. Western cushioned its lead to 20-14 and continued on for the 25-17 win to close out the sweep. Buckner and Hall each had 5 kills to lead the Vikings, who hit .375 as a team in the final set.
Lindsey Dorsey recorded a match-high 13 kills for Concordia, and Michele Brown recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 16 digs.
