Heat is forecasted to subside and give way to sporadic rainfall in the coming days over the northwest and British Columbia.

However, while this change in weather conditions will offer relief from the heat and smoke from existing wildfires, it is not likely to be enough to deter the threat of wildfire, especially east of the Cascades.

It is also expected that winds and lightning strikes will exacerbate existing fires or ignite new ones.

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, more than 3 million acres have been scorched this year in the Western United States.
