FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. – An Orcas Island bookkeeper pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $750,000 from a former astronaut and his wife.
Sarah Elizabeth Coffelt was hired in 2003 to keep records for two organizations the family ran.
The Seattle Times reports Coffelt admitted to stealing from retired Air Force Maj. Gen. William Anders and his wife, Valerie to cover the costs associated with her own business.
Coffelt also used the couple’s money to pay for family trips and her mortgage.
Anders was on the Apollo 8 mission, making him one of the first 3 people to leave Earth’s orbit and travel to the Moon.
