BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Orcas made a visit to Bellingham Bay Tuesday.
Social media was abuzz with news of their sighting and a number of people posted photos.
Ken Balcomb with the Center for Whale Research Center in Friday Harbor says they were likely transient whales that found seals to feed on in our local waters.
Transients have a varied diet unlike the Southern Residents that stick to salmon.
Balcomb says the transient population has been growing in the Salish Sea and they tend to visit Bellingham Bay once or twice a year.
A Coast Guard crew shot video of the whales and reminds boaters to strictly follow regulations when they find themselves close to orcas.
