BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Stolen goods valued at over $13,000 were recovered in an investigation of metal theft in Whatcom County.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office expects that value to keep going up as their investigation continues.

Valuable wire and tools were stolen from the Granite Construction gravel pit in Everson on September 30, and the wire ended up at a local recycler.

35-year-old Matthew Romero was identified as a suspect.

On Monday, a burglary at a business on Hemmi Road led deputies to Romero, who admitted to stealing tools and led deputies to where he stored them.

The Sheriff’s Office says several recovered tools have been linked to thefts reported to the Lynden Police Department.
