WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – Rescuers have been working through the night to find and bring people stranded by floodwaters to safety in Whatcom County.
That’s after a non-stop effort through the day Monday, November 15th.
John Gargett with the Sheriff’s Office Division of Emergency Management told KGMI last evening that they didn’t have an exact count of Monday’s rescues.
“We’ve had probably upwards of 125 rescues that were undertaken ,” say Gargett. “That’s based on the call logs from the dispatch center.”
Many of the rescuers are volunteers who also use their own equipment.
“They were out there all day Sunday, all last night,” says Gargett. “The volunteers with the fire district who’ve been really rocking it out there.”
He says no serious injuries have been reported and the one person who had been reported missing early Monday was found safe.
Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Deb Slater says at least 500 residents have been displaced by floodwaters.
Almost 300 of them are staying at emergency shelters set up at Everson Elementary, Nooksack Elementary and Christ the King Church in Lynden.
