SEATTLE, Wash. — The pandemic tops the issues Washington voters want state lawmakers to address as they convene next week.
A new Elway/Crosscut poll shows 52% of respondents say the pandemic is their top concern, but there’s disagreement on how to proceed.
47% say business restrictions have gone on long enough while 46% say they should stay in place until it’s safe.
New taxes get lukewarm support.
Just 40% say they would back a capital gains tax while 51% say they would support a tax on businesses with large payrolls.
A strong majority say fossil fuel producers should be required to reduce carbon emissions, with 47% backing a cap and trade plan.
Social service issues like homelessness are a top concern of just 13% while 11% say police reform should be a priority.
Overall, a majority expect 2021 to be a better year for the nation, state, their communities and families.
