BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Amendments to an agreement between Bellingham and a recycling company are hitting some resistance because they would kick the redevelopment can down the road.

The city and Parberry’s Northwest Recycling agreed in early 2019 that the company would move so its Old Town property could be turned into an urban village.

CEO Kevin Moore told the City Council Monday that they’ve now decided to take more drastic action.

So the company is asking for amendments to the agreement that would allow it to operate in Old Town as late as 2023.

That doesn’t sit well with Pinky Vargas and some other council members.

The council voted unanimously to send the amended agreement back to committee for reconsideration.

Parberry’s has operated as a scrap metal and recycling business in Old Town near the waterfront since 1923.
