BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Pediatric hospital capacity at Peacehealth St. Joseph’s Medical Center has been strained due to a surge in respiratory illnesses.

Now, Whatcom County health officials say it is causing a ripple effect in our area stores.

Children’s pain and fever medication are in high demand and some pharmacies could limit the amount customers can purchase.

There is also a nationwide shortage of liquid amoxicillin, which has local providers prescribing alternative options.

Parents are being urged to vaccinate their children and if they do get sick, keep them at home to rest.

Health officials add that not all pediatric fevers need to be treated with medication, especially in mild cases.
