BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Bellingham Police arrested a homeless man who officers say was causing erosion that could have affected an I-5 overpass.
Lieutenant Claudia Murphy says Kyle Hershey was living under the overpass at Whatcom Creek near Iowa Street and had been using a bucket to remove sand and water from around the bridge’s support beams.
He had been charged with a misdemeanor for the same activity in the past, but now faces a felony malicious mischief charge.
He also faces a charge of resisting arrest for refusing officers’ orders to surrender from a crawl space he was in under the bridge.
The Department of Transportation is assessing damage to the overpass.
