FERNDALE, Wash. —  A Ferndale elementary school was closed off Thursday morning as police investigated what looked like an explosive.

Riley Sweeney, Communications Officer at the City of Ferndale, says school district personnel found a suspicious device in the parking lot of Mountain View Elementary School and called the police.

Police secured the device and got help from a K-9 unit as well as the Bellingham Police Department to sweep the surrounding area and did not find any additional threats.

Sweeney says the device looks like a modified commercial firework mortar.

Ferndale Police don’t believe there is any immediate danger, but they are still investigating.

Mountain View Elementary has been closed since 2013, but currently the building is being leased for an educational program serving 38 students from across Whatcom County.
