OLYMPIA, Wash. — An initiative that would prohibit local governments from taxing sugary drinks and other grocery items is losing badly despite millions spent largely by the soft drink industry to promote it.
The latest Elway poll on initiatives finds I-1634 is behind by 20 percentage points.
Gun ownership Initiative 1639 is favored by 59 percent of respondents while 34 percent are opposed.
I-1639 would, among other things, raise the legal age to buy a semi-automatic rifle to 21.
And 50 percent support carbon emissions fee Initiative 1631, which has also drawn millions of dollars against it, mostly from major oil companies.
