BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Alaska lawmakers are taking a good look at their state’s ferry route to Bellingham as they consider cuts to their system’s budget.

Alaska’s Governor has proposed deep cuts that threaten to end service to Bellingham, but Port of Bellingham Commissioner Ken Bell says they’re still hopeful the route can be saved.

“They came back to the table and said they are going to take a look at their most profitable routes which happens to be the Bellingham to Alaska route,” he said.

Bell also told the Waterfront and Fishing Industry Forum that aired on KGMI Thursday night that the Port is looking into becoming a hub for the Washington State Ferry System.
