OLYMPIA, Wash. — As smoky summers become the norm rather than the exception in the Pacific Northwest, the Washington State Department of Health is urging you to prepare.
First, ask your doctor about what precautions you should take especially if you or a family member has heart or lung disease, including asthma.
Buying a portable air cleaner with a high efficiency HEPA filter and establishing a “clean room” with few windows where you can escape the smoke is also recommended.
And remember to cut back on outside activity during smoky days.
A coalition of government agencies have created the Washington Smoke Information blog, where you can get current information about wildfires and air quality all around the state.
Another way to track air quality, and to even help researchers with the gathering of data, is by downloading the EPA’s SmokeSense app.
