SEATTLE, Wash. – A Bellingham woman was one of two people who were hit by a speeding car on a closed section of I-5 in Seattle early Saturday.

The State Patrol reports troopers closed off the freeway near Olive Way as protesters entered the southbound lanes just before midnight.

A car that apparently entered the freeway from an exit ramp sped toward the group at about 1:30 a.m. and hit the 32-year-old woman from Bellingham and a 24-year-old woman from Seattle.

Both were taken to Harborview Medical Center where the Bellingham woman is in serious condition.

The woman from Seattle died Saturday evening at Harborview Medical Center.

Troopers arrested the 27-year-old Seattle man who was driving the car nearby.

They say the driver did not appear to be impaired and the incident remains under investigation.

This was the 19th consecutive night that protests shut down the freeway in Seattle, and State Patrol Captain Ron Mead says that while the patrol supports the right of peaceful protest the “interstate is not a safe place to do that.”
