OLYMPIA, Wash. — Cooke Aquaculture’s request to switch species it grows in four Puget Sound net pens, including one in Skagit County, has made it through the first of multiple steps in the permit process.

After receiving approval from the Department of Fish and Wildlife, the company is seeking Ecology’s approval for updated water quality permits.

While Ecology determined that switching species would not change potential impacts on water quality, the agency is strengthening regulations to ensure water quality is protected.

Hearing information and documents are available for public review and comments will be accepted online through October 26.
