LYNDEN, Wash. – There’s an uproar in the Lynden community over a racially-charged letter targeted at a young family in a growing neighborhood.

The unsigned letter lashes out at a family on Woodsman Drive for allowing their kids to play in the street.

“It had some derogatory statements in it, racial derogatory statements in it, that [are] extremely upsetting to the neighborhood. It’s extremely rude. It’s not illegal, but it’s not something that anyone would want to receive from a neighbor,” Lynden Police Department Deputy Chief John Billester said.

The letter has gone viral on social media, with hundreds of people sharing and commenting on it.

While Lynden city ordinance technically doesn’t allow playing in the street, Billester said he’s not worried about it, especially since the home is on a quiet cul-de-sac.

“The police department doesn’t go out on a daily basis looking for people that are playing in the street, or kids that are having a good time in the street.”

Even though Billester said the letter itself isn’t illegal, he said he’s not happy about it.

“This is not what Lynden is about. We would certainly like to talk to this person and take care of this matter,” said Billester.

The Woodsman Drive home where the targeted family lives is in a new neighborhood on Lynden’s eastern edge that’s still being developed.
