PORT ANGELES, Wash. – A paddle boarder found an extremely rare deep sea fish near Port Angeles Sunday.

KOMO reports the paddle boarder found the large animal dead and submerged at the Salt Creek Recreation area and reported it to officials with Harbor Wildwatch who confirmed that it was a ribbonfish, known as the King-of-Salmon.

A spokesperson for the organization says the 4-6-foot fish with large, coffee-cup-sized eyes is rarely seen in the wild and even rarer to find washed ashore.

They typically live around 3,000 feet deep along the Pacific Coast.
