BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Several people were rescued from the Marietta neighborhood after rising temperatures led to flooding on Christmas morning.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said that members from their Emergency Management Division rescued six people and five dogs after the Nooksack River began flooding homes on Marine Drive.
Officials said that a combination of ice jams, melting snow, and King Tides all contributed to the sudden flooding.
They are asking people to obey Road Closed signs, as many roadways in the Marietta area remain covered with water.
The Red Cross is providing shelter for two of the impacted residents and have opened a shelter for anyone impacted by flooding at Cordata Presbyterian Church in Bellingham (400 Meadowbrook Court Bellingham WA, 98226).
Anyone who has been impacted by the flooding is being asked to contact the Red Cross.
