LYMAN, Wash. — There is finally some relief for three Lyman families who lost their homes to the Skagit River.

Lyman Mayor Eddie Hills tells KOMO the county is buying the properties in purchase agreements with the families for $1.2 million after erosion damage from flooding last November began to sweep chunks of the homes away.

“They got very lucky. It was definitely a long shot that they would get any type of reimbursement,” he said.

Appraisers are expected to start working on the homes next week and after sales close, the homes will be demolished and development will be prohibited on the land.

Hills added, “The sad part is they’ll probably have to leave Lyman. There’s not a lot of housing available.”

KOMO reports the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will meet with Skagit County residents next week as well to prepare a plan as the Skagit River continues to erode the area.
