SUDDEN VALLEY, WASH. – The summer opening of the North Cascades Highway could set a record for being late.
The road has been buried in snow for months – pushing back the date for plows to start clearing.
Andrea Petrich with the state Department of Transportation says crews just started and have a long eight weeks of crucial work ahead.
“Businesses on each side of this closed section rely on the summer traffic so we definitely want to get it open as soon as possible. But we want to make sure it’s safe,” Petrich says.
Crews also have boulders and trees to clear from the highway.
As temperatures warm up, spotters will be out with crews watching for any dangers, like avalanches.
