OLYMPIA, Wash. — A bill aimed at letting community and technical college students know if “low-cost” materials are available for their courses passed the state House unanimously Monday.

Republican Representative Luanne Van Werven of Lynden is the prime sponsor of the bill and says it’s part of her efforts to make college textbooks and tuition more affordable.

If approved, the measure would require schools to let students know when they register whether low-cost materials, which is defined as $50 or less, are available.

“The cost of tuition and textbooks has increased by more than 200 percent over the last twenty years . . . . Adding some transparency to the cost of textbooks is another step to making higher education more affordable,” says Van Werven in a release.
