BELLINGHAM, WASH. – Gray whales are common around the Puget Sound, but the one found dead in Bellingham Bay last week hadn’t been spotted before.

Cascadia Research says the older female doesn’t fit the description of known whales in the region.

An examination showed signs of malnutrition and a skin condition not previously seen in gray whales from this area.

She was estimated to be more than 35-years-old.

The lifespan of a healthy gray whale is about 50-to-70 years.
