NEWHALEM, Wash – If you were thinking about a hike in the North Cascades over the holiday weekend, at least one route to get there is closed to you.
The Washington State Department of transportation has closed Highway 20 at milepost 21, just east of Newhalem due to a rock slide. A gate signals drivers to turn around.
Snow clearing 13 miles to the east continues as the normal winter closure of the North Cascades Highway is expected to extended into June this year due to the heavy snow pack.
