OAK HARBOR, Wash. — The construction of a new roundabout by the Naval Air Station on Whidbey Island is finally complete.
State Department of Transportation crews have been working on the roundabout on Highway 20 since June 6, aiming to complete the project on the Fourth of July.
It opened this Sunday, ten days ahead of schedule.
WSDOT says law enforcement responded to nearly 30 crashes at that intersection since 2011, half of which involved vehicles trying to turn onto the highway from side roads.
The agency hopes the new roundabout will improve safety at the busy intersection at Banta and Northgate Roads on Whidbey Island.
